Journal responses are worth 35 points each, unless labeled otherwise. Responses should be a minimum of 3 paragraphs and should address the entire journal topic. Journal responses will be graded based on their Clarity, Precision, Logic, Accuracy, Relevance, Depth, and Breadth. These concepts can be found on the Universal Intellectual Standards handout.
1. 8/31/16 – “Because we focused on the snake, we missed the scorpion.” Proverbs give insight into a culture’s values, morals, and overall way of looking at the world. Explain what the proverb means and how it can be applied to life. Use specific examples to support your point.
2. 9/2/16 – Free Write Friday! Write freely about any topic of your choosing. Your response must be a minimum of 15 sentences.
3. 9/8/16 - In the story of Noah and the Flood, God says that "imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth." Do you think that people are naturally inclined to do wrong or to do good? Address an opposing point of view in your response.
4. 9/9/16 – Write freely about your thoughts and feelings on the works from the Spiritual and Creation unit. What do you think about the different cultures’ values and beliefs? Your response must be a minimum of 15 sentences.
5. 9/15/16 - After reading the description of the Bhagavad-Gita, on pages 128-129, explain at least two of the ideas of Hindu philosophy that are covered in the text and whether you think they can be applied in contemporary American society.
6. 9/20/16 – After reading the first chapter of Siddhartha, discuss your initials thoughts and feelings about the character of Siddhartha? Based on the ideas presented in the chapter make a prediction about possible themes. Your response should be a minimum of 15 sentences. (15 points).
7. 9/23/16 – After reading chapter 4 of Siddhartha, identify a theme that Hesse lays out in the first part of the book. Explain how can the theme you identified can be applied to your life.

8. 10/17/16 – How would life in modern American society change if people lived according to Taoist teachings? Do you think it would be for the better? Explain your answer.
9. 10/20/16 – How do the Analects and the Tao Te Ching differ in their teaching about conduct of everyday life? How do they compare in their attitudes toward leadership and authority? Use textual evidence from each work to support your answer.
10. 11/2/16 – In the excerpt from Plato’s Apology, Socrates talks at length about what it means to be "good." Identify and explain two ideas that Socrates addresses in the second to last paragraph of his speech, “You too, gentlemen of the jury…both I myself and my children,” (251-253). Do you agree with the ideas that Socrates lays out in this paragraph? Do not use “I” in your answer.
11. 11/4/16 – In different ways, the selections from the Persia/Arabia unit offer truths to live by. Choose three of these truths, each one from a different selection, and explain each briefly in your own words. For each truth, include at least one example of how a person might live by it. Which of the three do you think is most relevant to your own life?
12. 11/9/16 – Choose three of the proverbs from the West African Proverbs section from pages 664-667 and explain what they mean and how they can be applied to life. Use specific examples to support your point. Make sure your explanations have breadth and depth.
13. 11/10/16 - Free Write Friday! Write freely about any topic of your choosing. Your response must be a minimum of 15 sentences (15 points).
14. 11/18/16 – Write freely about your thoughts on Things Fall Apart. What are possible themes that Achebe presents in the book? How did you feel about the characters in the book? Were you satisfied with the outcome of the plot? Your response should be a minimum of 15 sentences. (15 points).

15. 1/12/17 – “To love is to risk not being loved in return. To hope is to risk pain. To try is to risk failure, but risk must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.” Explain what the quote means. How does this quote relate to Act 1 of Cyrano de Bergerac? Use specific examples to support your point.
16. 1/19/17 – “The glory of great men should always be measured by the means they have used to acquire it.” Explain what the quote means. How does this quote relate to Act 2 of Cyrano de Bergerac? Use specific examples to support your point.
17. 1/26/17 – Free Write – Express any and all thoughts you have about Cyrano de Bergerac or any topic that relates in any way to Cyrano de Bergerac. Your response should be a minimum of 15 sentences (15 points).
18. 2/3/17 – Self-concept, strictly defined, is the totality of our beliefs, preferences, opinions and attitudes organized in a systematic manner, towards our personal existence. Simply put, it is how we think of ourselves and how we should think, behave and act out our various life roles. Use specific details to describe your self-concept. Discuss the ways your self-perception affects how you in your everyday life.
